FIGC Headquarters Targeted by Fans as Italy Misses World Cup for Third Straight Time
Following a devastating defeat in the World Cup play-off Final against Bosnia and Herzegovina, the headquarters of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) in Rome became the target of frustrated fans. Eggs were thrown at the building during the night as supporters expressed their anger over the Azzurri's elimination.
Reports from Italy indicate that disgruntled fans, vexed by Italy's failure to qualify for the World Cup, converged on Tuesday night to hurl eggs at the entrance of the FIGC headquarters on Via Allegri in Rome.
On Wednesday morning, as FIGC President Gabriele Gravina arrived at the headquarters, he was confronted by a fan holding a banner that explicitly called for his resignation.
This marks the third consecutive time the Azzurri have failed to secure a spot in the World Cup, with the last two instances occurring under Gravina's presidency.
Gravina publicly refused to resign immediately following the defeat but has scheduled a general FIGC meeting for Thursday, April 2, to address the critical situation.
The FIGC President is now facing immense domestic pressure, even from high-ranking officials such as Sports Minister Andrea Abodi, who has urged Gravina to acknowledge his responsibility for what is widely considered another disastrous outcome for Italian football.
