During the third flat stage of the Giro di Catalogna, an unexpected breakaway saw two cycling titans, Remco Evenepoel and Jonas Vingegaard, launch a daring attack. After days of anticipation, the duo surged ahead with 24 km to go, establishing a significant lead over the peloton, who seemed to be caught off guard.

As Evenepoel and Vingegaard approached the finish line in Vila-seca, just 800 meters from the end, drama struck. Evenepoel skidded on a pedestrian crossing, crashing at approximately 60 km/h and sustaining injuries. Vingegaard, witnessing the incident, displayed remarkable sportsmanship by slowing down and allowing the chasing group to catch him, foregoing any potential advantage from his rival's misfortune.
The stage was ultimately won in a sprint by French rider Dorian Godon (Ineos Grenadiers), 29, who secured his second stage victory and claimed the white leader's jersey.
Vingegaard's Fair Play
All eyes were on the two cycling phenomena. Evenepoel, still somewhat dazed at the finish, struggled to explain what had happened. Vingegaard, the Danish rider for Visma-Lease a Bike, commented on his decision: "I don't know what happened to him, it was a bit of a crazy crash. Of course, I didn't want to take any advantage from that situation, so I slowed down and let the group catch me. I really didn't expect his fall. We worked very well together; he was incredibly strong."
Attention now shifts to the upcoming three mountain finishes, scheduled from Thursday to Saturday, before the grand finale on Sunday in Barcelona on the Olympic Montjuïc circuit. Spectators can anticipate more thrilling action.
