Roma striker Donyell Malen will not join the Netherlands squad for the upcoming Nations League matches. The Oranje's official website announced his withdrawal. This news came as a surprise, as Malen appeared fit after Roma's 2-2 draw with Inter on Saturday. The exact nature of his injury remains undisclosed.
Malen is out of the Netherlands team for their campaign in Group 2, which includes Germany, Serbia, and Greece. Their first match is against Germany on September 24.
Guus Til and Mexx Meerdink have been called up as replacements for Malen and the injured Justin Kluivert.
The 27-year-old forward has been in strong form for Roma this season, scoring six goals in five Serie A appearances and providing one assist in the Champions League. For the Dutch national team, Malen has scored 13 goals in 56 senior caps since his debut in September 2019.
This is the second blow for Roma ahead of the international break, as Wesley also withdrew from the Brazil squad due to a muscular issue.
