Des Walker Backs Roberto Mancini for Italy Coaching Role: "Understands the Game Really Well"
Former England and Sampdoria defender Des Walker has endorsed his ex-teammate Roberto Mancini for a potential return to coach the Italian national team, citing Mancini's profound understanding of football as a key factor.
While some have voiced criticism regarding Mancini's possible reappointment, Walker believes a manager with clear objectives and a defined vision is essential. He highlighted Mancini as the most exceptionally talented teammate he has ever played with, praising his remarkable awareness on the pitch.
Walker shared these insights during an interview on The Italian Football Podcast, as part of an online event presented by BetVictor.
Des Walker Advocates for Roberto Mancini's Return to Italy: "He Grasps the Game Exceptionally Well"
“He possesses a strong grasp of football. He operates independently, following his own methods and principles. His previous experience as Italy's manager means the team is familiar with his style, his philosophy, and his approach. If they decide to re-hire him, it signifies their desire for precisely that. A national team manager rarely gets a second chance, so they’ve already had a clear indication of his capabilities. This must be what they are looking for,” Walker stated.
“Having played alongside Roberto, I can attest that he understands the game at a very deep level. He is decisive about his intentions and his preferred style of play. He is not hesitant to challenge conventional wisdom or to implement his vision.”
“I believe this is a crucial quality for a manager. You need a singular leader who is resolute in pursuing their path.”
“Between us, I believe he was already serving as manager when I was at [Sampdoria],” Walker added.
Des Walker on Mancini: "By Far the Most Talented Teammate I've Ever Had"
“He was, by a considerable margin, the most talented teammate I have ever had. The maneuvers he performed in training often defied belief. I played alongside players like Nigel Clough, but Mancini was on another level.”
“He had an extraordinary awareness of everyone around him. Yet, Mancini still surpassed that by a significant margin. More often than not, he didn’t even need to look; he instinctively knew the position of every player.”
“His skill level was exceptional. While training was challenging enough, the things he accomplished during matches were simply astounding,” Walker concluded.
Des Walker spent one season in Serie A with Sampdoria, where he shared the dressing room with Roberto Mancini. Walker joined the Blucerchiati before the 92/93 season, participating in 32 matches across all competitions.
