Can Serie A Clubs Afford Newcastle Star Sandro Tonali?

Juventus is reportedly interested in acquiring Italy and Newcastle star Sandro Tonali, but his anticipated transfer fee this summer will likely make it financially unfeasible for any Serie A club to sign the former AC Milan midfielder.

Tonali is widely recognized as one of Europe's most highly-rated central midfielders, a status further solidified by his impressive performances for the Italian national team.

While several former Juventus and Italy legends have publicly urged the Bianconeri to secure the 25-year-old from Lodi, the intense competition, particularly on the financial front, poses a significant challenge for Juventus in any bid for the Italian ace.

Given Newcastle's strong likelihood of not qualifying for any European competition this season, and with numerous top clubs eyeing the former Milan star for the upcoming summer window, a transfer appears increasingly probable.

Tonali's agent, Beppe Riso, is scheduled to hold discussions with the Magpies this month to ascertain his client's future. Last month, Riso commented, "We will evaluate in March whether Newcastle are open to anything, but right now he is playing in the Champions League, it is not the right moment to talk about it."

The former Milan star has recorded three goals and seven assists in 47 appearances across all competitions for Newcastle this season.

According to reports circulating in Italy, Newcastle is expected to demand at least €90 million for Tonali next summer. This valuation would make it exceedingly difficult for Juventus to compete with financially stronger Premier League clubs.

Arsenal, Manchester United, and Manchester City are among the English clubs reportedly interested in the Italy international, who joined the Magpies from Milan in a deal exceeding €70 million in the summer of 2023.

Irrespective of Tonali's future beyond the summer, the Italian midfielder has undoubtedly established a profound connection with Newcastle and its loyal supporters.

Tonali recently conveyed his heartfelt gratitude to the Magpies’ fanbase, particularly for their steadfast support during his betting ban in 2024.

Reflecting on the experience, Tonali stated, “It goes beyond football; it’s a matter of everyday life. Too often, we judge people before really knowing them, and we hurt them." He elaborated, “The line between right and wrong is very thin, but Newcastle fans never cross it. They see, they understand, and they think; they don’t judge. Their behaviour has taught me not to judge. Everyone can make mistakes, but that doesn’t mean everyone has the right to judge. I will always acknowledge this credit to Newcastle fans. If I think this way today, it’s because they did the same to me."

He further added, “It’s rare for such a bond to be created between a player and fans without really having done anything. I basically just play football. Many people play football, and many play it well, but not everyone has this kind of relationship with their fans. I was, and still am, surprised by the affection I receive.”
