Buffon and Gattuso to Stay with Italy Until June After World Cup Qualification Failure

Gianluigi Buffon has indicated that he and Gennaro Gattuso plan to remain with the Italian national team until June. This interim period is seemingly intended to allow the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) sufficient time to appoint a new head coach, following Italy's failure to qualify for the World Cup.

This announcement comes after Italy's recent defeat in a crucial match. Having secured a 2-0 victory against Northern Ireland in the play-off semi-final, the Azzurri took an early lead against Bosnia and Herzegovina with a goal from Moise Kean. However, Alessandro Bastoni's red card altered the game's momentum. Bosnia equalized through Haris Tabakovic, and after extra time, clinched the win in a penalty shootout, with misses from Francesco Pio Esposito and Bryan Cristante.

Buffon Addresses His Future with the National Team

FIGC President Gabriele Gravina had reportedly requested Gattuso and Buffon to continue their roles within the Italy staff, though the precise nature and duration of their commitment appeared uncertain.

During a press conference, Buffon acknowledged the current 'delicate moment' for Italian football, emphasizing the need for careful evaluation. He stated, “Clearly, the sporting season ends in June, so until then it is only right and fair for us to be available to the Federation, the President, and all those who had faith in me.”

Italian football is currently navigating a significant crisis, marked by the national team's failure to qualify for three consecutive World Cups and persistent struggles at club level.

Despite the recent setback, Buffon noted a commendable fighting spirit within the Azzurri, even after being reduced to ten men, as they created opportunities to win the match.

Responding to media compliments about perceived improvements, Buffon said, “If you realised something is changing and improving, then I am very happy, because that was one of the objectives we set, but clearly the most important objective was to go to the World Cup.” He added, “This is something that truly hurts and that means we run the risk of not thinking clearly, so I will stop there. We’ll be here until June, then we’ll see for the rest how the whole thing is tackled.”

Meanwhile, FIGC President Gravina has indicated plans to call elections next week. A potential change in the Federation's leadership could consequently lead to further changes in the management of the Italian national team.
