Bosnia Coach Barbarez: 'We'll Park the Bus Against Italy if We Lead'

Bosnia and Herzegovina's head coach Sergej Barbarez has stated he would have no qualms about "parking the bus" if his team secures a 1-0 lead against Italy in their upcoming World Cup play-off final. He also indicated that he expects Italy to adopt a similar defensive strategy should the scoreline be in their favor.

Bosnia and Herzegovina are set to host Italy in Zenica for the crucial World Cup play-off final on Tuesday evening, with kickoff scheduled for 19:45 BST. Italy, often referred to as "The Azzurri," secured their spot by defeating Northern Ireland 2-0 in Bergamo on Thursday. On the same night, Bosnia and Herzegovina advanced by beating Wales on penalties in Cardiff.

Despite playing an extended 30 minutes in their last match on Thursday, Barbarez confirmed that his entire squad is fit and ready for the challenge against Italy.

"Everyone is well, except for me – I've lost my voice," Barbarez joked during his pre-match press conference. "We've had sufficient time to recover. The previous game was tough, but we are content with the outcome and hope to maintain our performance until the final whistle."

When questioned by reporters about suggestions that the Bosnian national team might be "too slow," Barbarez dismissed the concerns. He emphasized, "Game preparation involves strategizing our play. What truly matters is my players' performance tomorrow, not external opinions or comments."

Reflecting on their emotionally charged penalty shootout win against Wales, Barbarez noted, "We expended too much energy against Wales, which was a significant error. We've learned from that and won't repeat it. Tomorrow is a new day, and we must accept whatever outcome it brings." He acknowledged the immense importance of the match for Italy, but stressed its even greater significance for Bosnia, particularly given the current national situation.

Barbarez also shared his assessment of the Italian national team based on his analysis thus far.

"We need courage, meticulous attention to detail, and our absolute best performance," he stated. "We must avoid panic and may require some luck to find the net. If we manage a 1-0 lead, we'll certainly adopt a defensive stance ('park the bus'). Conversely, if they lead, the bus will be at their end. For now, let's just focus on starting the game. I'm proud to have reached this stage and deeply appreciate the dedication and affection from my players."

Finally, Barbarez indicated that he's unlikely to introduce any significant tactical or lineup changes for the crucial match against Italy. "We've maintained a consistent system for eighteen months," he explained, "and I don't believe now is the time for experimentation."
