Bernardeschi snubbed Gasperini for Toronto FC move: ‘80%’ about money
Former Juventus winger Federico Bernardeschi, now with Bologna, recently opened up about his move to Toronto FC in 2022, confessing that financial considerations heavily influenced his decision. He revealed that Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini had personally reached out to him, tempting him with a move to Bergamo, but Bernardeschi ultimately opted for North America. "I admit money influenced my decision for 80%, and the remaining 20% was a life choice," he stated.
Bernardeschi, who returned to Serie A last summer after three years with Toronto FC, discussed the evolving landscape of Italian football in an interview ahead of Bologna's Europa League clash with Roma. "I've found a different Serie A; now even the smaller teams are better equipped. Technology is helping everyone, and everyone is organised," he observed. "There's never an easy game, at any level, from the race for survival to Europe."
Speaking about the upcoming match against Roma, Bernardeschi expressed regret over Paulo Dybala's absence due to injury. "I'm sorry for Paulo, I'd have been happy to challenge him, even if it's always better not to play against his left foot," he admitted, adding that he would be glad to reunite with other Italian national team friends. He also recalled his time at Juventus, mentioning his desire for the number 10 jersey, which he was told to wait for before Dybala, already in his third year, claimed it. Bernardeschi also expressed a preference for facing a non-Italian club in European competitions to see more Italian teams progress.
His move back to Bologna initially raised questions in the media about his suitability for Serie A after his MLS spell. However, Bernardeschi has silenced critics with five goals and one assist in 32 appearances. "I know myself. I didn't go to Canada to take a walk in the park," he asserted, emphasizing his commitment. He also credited Cristiano Ronaldo for teaching him the importance of professionalism in all aspects. Despite suffering a knee injury and missing pre-season upon his return, he quickly readjusted, confident in his physical condition maintained during his time in MLS.
Bernardeschi further revealed that Roma had also pursued him during his Juventus tenure, but he declined their offer, stating he was happy in Turin.
