WTA Madrid 1000: Avanesyan, Gracheva, Cirstea Fall; Eala Advances in First Round

First round matches were held on Tuesday, April 22, at the WTA 1000 clay court tournament in Madrid, Spain. Several players were eliminated at the initial stage, while others secured their spot in the next round.

Notable results from the first round include:

  • Alexandra Eala (Philippines, WC) defeated Viktoriya Tomova (Bulgaria) – 6-3, 6-2
  • Marie Bouzkova (Czech Republic) defeated Renata Zarazua (Mexico) – 6-2, 4-6, 6-1
  • Jessica Bouzas Maneiro (Spain) defeated Mayar Sherif (Egypt) – 6-3, 6-1
  • Hailey Baptiste (USA, WC) defeated Sorana Cirstea (Romania) – 6-2, 5-7, 7-6(4)
  • Katie Boulter (Great Britain) defeated Katerina Siniakova (Czech Republic) – 4-6, 6-2, 6-1
  • Lulu Sun (New Zealand) defeated Varvara Gracheva (France) – 3-6, 6-1, 6-4
  • Camila Osorio (Colombia) defeated Emiliana Arango (Colombia, WC) – 6-3, 6-3
  • Peyton Stearns (USA) defeated Kimberly Birrell (Australia) – 5-7, 6-3, 6-4

The 19-year-old Eala`s victory is particularly noteworthy, as she becomes the second Asian teenage tennis player to secure five wins at WTA 1000 tournaments within a single season, a feat previously achieved by Naomi Osaka in 2017. Earlier this season, Eala also reached the semifinals in Miami.
