On Monday, the Washington Wizards basketball team unveiled their new “City Edition” uniforms, which pay homage to the popular gold design the team wore between 2006 and 2009.
Unlike previous all-gold kits, this new design, set to debut on November 16 in a game against the Brooklyn Nets, features a black stripe down the center and a white stripe above the “Washington” lettering across the chest. These elements are borrowed from the 2021 “mixtape” City Edition uniform.
Two black stripes also adorn the neckline, shoulders, and player numbers, while the shorts are complemented by black side panels and a waistband.
According to Rebecca Winn, Senior Vice President of Marketing for the Wizards, the black-and-gold uniform design has been highly requested by fans and players since the “City Edition” series began in 2017.
In a press release, Winn stated, “When Nike asked us to `remix` a former City Edition design, we immediately thought of the classic Wizards uniform first introduced in 2006.”
A silhouette of the Washington Monument is visible within the “Washington” lettering across the chest. The belt buckle features an updated Wizards logo, and the D.C. hand logo appears in white with a gold outline on the right side of the shorts.
On the left side of the shorts, the “DMV” insignia (referencing the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia regions) is also present, serving as another nod to the 2021 City Edition design. The 2021 uniform marked the first time the “DMV” abbreviation was used on a sports team`s uniform from this region.
The Wizards team will wear this uniform 29 times during the 2025-2026 season. A corresponding “City Edition” basketball court design will be unveiled at a later date.
