Italian football legend Christian Vieri has voiced his agreement with Gennaro Gattuso regarding the optimal strike partnership for the upcoming World Cup play-off semifinal against Northern Ireland. Vieri believes that Moise Kean and Mateo Retegui are the ideal duo to lead the Azzurri’s attack.
Vieri ‘Optimistic’ About Italy’s World Cup Hopes
As Italy prepares to host Northern Ireland in Bergamo for the crucial play-off semifinal, Vieri shared his optimism about the team’s chances. “Nobody knows for sure, but I’m optimistic,” he stated. “We are Italy, and we absolutely must qualify. It’s time to approach this play-off with energy and positivity.”
Italy has not participated in a World Cup since 2014, and a victory tonight would see them face either Wales or Bosnia and Herzegovina away in the final. Vieri acknowledged the challenge posed by their opponents: “Northern Ireland is highly motivated; they haven’t played at a World Cup for 40 years, and they are a team that runs tirelessly.”
However, he emphasized Italy’s home advantage: “But we are playing in Bergamo, and the entire stadium will be filled with blue. We must be charged and display great desire, and honestly, the players possess that. Another World Cup without Italy simply wouldn’t be right.”
Gattuso is widely expected to start Retegui and Kean up front tonight. Vieri backed this decision, stating, “They have scored many goals, and they deserve our trust.”
Regarding emerging talent, Vieri suggested that Pio Esposito could be a valuable asset coming off the bench. “I see Pio Esposito making a better impact as a substitute during the game. He represents our future, but let’s not overwhelm him with pressure. There are very few 20-year-old players of his caliber.”
Vieri also touched upon the intense scrutiny young players face in Italy. “He transitioned naturally from Spezia to playing at San Siro, where the whole world watches you. In Italy, there’s far too much pressure. If a player like Yamal has a bad game in Spain, nobody makes a fuss. Here, all hell breaks loose.”
