Vicario: Italy Ready for World Cup Play-off Despite Pressure

Guglielmo Vicario forthrightly addresses the palpable pressure weighing on the Italian national team as they head into tonight’s critical World Cup play-off final against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Despite this, he observes a notable “readiness” among his teammates, stemming from their recent 2-0 triumph over Northern Ireland in Bergamo.

The pivotal play-off final is scheduled to commence at 19:45 BST (20:45 CET) at Bosnia’s Bilino Polje Stadium in Zenica.

The victor will be decided within 90 minutes, with the possibility of extra time or a penalty shootout if necessary. The winning side will secure a coveted spot in World Cup Group B, joining Canada, Switzerland, and Qatar.

Vicario Previews Bosnia vs. Italy: “The Pressure Persists”

The Azzurri secured their place in the final with a 2-0 semi-final victory against Northern Ireland, courtesy of goals from Sandro Tonali and Moise Kean. The coach is expected to field the same starting XI that performed in Bergamo, disregarding earlier rumors about Francesco Pio Esposito or Marco Palestra.

Bosnia and Herzegovina advanced after a tense semi-final against Wales, winning on penalties following a 1-1 draw. Veteran striker Edin Dzeko, formerly of Roma, Inter, and Fiorentina, netted their equalizer.

The burden of expectation is particularly heavy on Italy, given their consecutive failures to qualify for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, both times eliminated in the play-offs.

“The pressure certainly persists,” stated Vicario, who, although not officially part of the squad, traveled with the team. He further elaborated, “However, perhaps subconsciously, we approached this game feeling a bit more prepared and, I hope, slightly more composed after our initial performance in Bergamo. I believe losing concentration today is something we absolutely cannot afford; it’s profoundly important.”

“I’ve witnessed the lads in excellent spirits, thoroughly motivated; we all grasp the profound importance of this encounter.”

Vicario also credited coach Gennaro Gattuso for rejuvenating the Nazionale with renewed enthusiasm and a strong sense of unity since his appointment last summer.

“Our collaborative work with the coach has been ongoing for months. He’s successfully reignited the team’s passion and fostered a collective identity. Ultimately, what transpires on the pitch is paramount, not mere pronouncements.”

Vicario’s Expectations for Bosnia and Herzegovina

When asked about his expectations for Bosnia and Herzegovina tonight, Vicario offered insights:

“The home crowd’s energy will likely propel them to be aggressive from the outset, particularly in their defensive pressing. We anticipate phases where they exhibit patience, interspersed with potent counter-attacks. Demirovic, notably, makes impactful runs during their high press. This is a team comprising quality, international-level players, possessing considerable stamina and dynamism. Individual battles will prove decisive.”

Vicario dismissed any apprehension regarding the playing surface in Zenica, affirming, “The pitch doesn’t strike me as being in poor condition; the ball moves without any significant hindrances. I’m confident our finest attributes will come to the fore.”
