Marcus Thuram and Nicolò Barella believe that the lessons learned from finishing last season without silverware have significantly strengthened Inter Milan. They feel their current camaraderie is instrumental in their drive towards the Scudetto title.
Although Inter showed some initial sluggishness in their match against Cagliari, failing to break down their opponents in the first half, they intensified their play after the interval. The breakthrough came when Federico Dimarco provided his 16th assist of the season for Thuram to score. Barella quickly followed suit, converting a rebound.
Piotr Zielinski capped off the 3-0 victory with a stunning long-range strike in stoppage time.
Inter on the Brink of Scudetto Glory
Thuram has found exceptional form at a crucial time, demonstrating a prolific scoring run with four goals and two assists in Inter’s last three games. He expressed his current positive momentum: “Nothing has really changed; these are moments. I’m in a good phase now, and that’s beneficial for Inter.” He added, “It’s not over yet; we must continue to push and accumulate points. We are a team that enjoys playing and spending time together, and that connection is evident on the field.”
While Barella refrained from celebrating his goal against his hometown club, Thuram playfully acknowledged the achievement with a piggy-back ride.
Inter entered the weekend with a substantial nine-point lead at the top of Serie A, a margin that is guaranteed to be maintained heading into the final five matches. The San Siro crowd’s jubilant chant of “we will win the tricolor” at the final whistle underscored the team’s imminent title victory.
“I hope we win the tricolor!” Barella responded enthusiastically. He reflected on the past season: “It’s gratifying. Last season was challenging and taught us a great deal, but now we truly need to win. Witnessing this atmosphere, fueled by our determination, commitment, and hard work, is simply marvelous.”
Inter is on a strong trajectory towards the Scudetto. Historically, they have only won 25 of their opening 33 Serie A matches on four previous occasions: in the 2023-24, 2006-07, and 1988-89 seasons.
“Statistics only tell part of the story; the crucial aspect is giving your all on the field. I also want to commend Emil Audero for his performance. It wasn’t easy for him given the circumstances, and we made an effort to support him, so he deserves this moment.”
Goalkeeper Emil Audero made a rare start in this match. His season had been impacted by a tragic incident where an elderly man lost control of his vehicle and collided with Audero’s car.
