Former Juventus winger Massimo Mauro has stated that the club needs to make four high-caliber acquisitions to be competitive for the Serie A title and the Champions League next season, asserting that Luciano Spalletti alone cannot achieve this. “Spalletti isn’t a magician,” Mauro commented.
Juventus is currently vying for a Champions League qualification spot, occupying fifth place in the Serie A standings, just one point behind Como. Notably, Como holds a superior head-to-head record against Juventus this season, which would place them higher in the standings if they finish with the same number of points.
Mauro: ‘Spalletti Isn’t a Magician’
Regardless of their European competition status next season, Juventus intends to continue with Luciano Spalletti and is expected to confirm his contract extension soon. However, Mauro believes that the Italian manager’s continued presence will not be enough for Juventus to reclaim their former glory.
“Spalletti isn’t a magician; he requires players of the appropriate caliber to contend for the title and the Champions League, as that is what is expected of Juventus,” Mauro told Gazzetta. “I am certain that Comolli and Chiellini already have their player list well-organized and are targeting players of Juventus’s level.”
The former winger elaborated, stating that the club needs an “international-class goalkeeper,” a “top-tier defender,” a “top-tier midfielder,” and a “top-tier center-forward.”
Regarding Spalletti’s role, Mauro’s expectations are clear: “He must achieve what he did at Napoli. Foster the belief of being strong and prove it humbly, game after game. At Juventus, there is an environment that keeps you grounded, so it should be easier than at Napoli.”
“However, this is only effective if you secure four significant signings,” Mauro continued. “Kim, Anguissa, Lobotka, and Osimhen were instrumental in winning the title alongside Kvaratskhelia; they formed the team’s backbone, and that is precisely what Juventus needs to find.”
The former Juventus player also highlighted the significant improvement of several players, including Kenan Yıldız and Marcus Thuram, under Spalletti’s management.
“Kenan has become another player you can truly rely on for the future, which was not a given considering how he started last season,” Mauro concluded. “He is truly a cornerstone and has surpassed Gatti, who was untouchable under Allegri.”
