Formula 1 drivers have assessed Max Verstappen`s prospects for a remarkable championship comeback this season against McLaren`s Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, following the Dutchman`s recent surge of race victories.
After an uncharacteristic period of nearly four months without a top podium finish, Verstappen`s back-to-back wins in Monza and Baku mean the reigning four-time world champion arrives at this weekend`s Singapore Grand Prix with considerable momentum and a strong position at the front of the field.
However, his points gap to championship leader Piastri remains substantial at 69 points, with second-placed Norris holding a 44-point advantage over Verstappen. So, what are the odds of Verstappen still securing a fifth world title this year?
During Thursday`s media day in Singapore, several of Verstappen`s rivals were asked to quantify his chances.
“I would estimate it at 20 [percent].”
“The points difference is significant, and I believe that on low-downforce tracks like Monza and Baku, the Red Bull car was exceptionally strong.”
“I anticipate McLaren will regain the pace we`ve seen for most of the season here and at upcoming circuits. Therefore, I consider it highly improbable, but one never knows.”
“They introduced an upgrade in Monza that appears effective, but I don`t believe it will be enough to outperform McLaren on high-downforce tracks.”
“We are all aware of Max`s capabilities and how formidable he becomes when there`s a title to pursue.”
“So yes, there`s a strong possibility that if he maintains a competitive car until the end of the year, he could bridge the gap.”
“I`d say 15 [percent]. A single incident between Lando and Oscar could change everything. I`m unsure of the bookmakers` odds, but I`ll stick with 15.”
Predictably, Norris refrained from directly evaluating his main competitor`s chances, simply saying:
“I mean, there`s a possibility, so… more than zero. I`m not sure.”
Conversely, Mercedes` George Russell provided a more humorous response to the query while sharing the press conference stage with his compatriot and friend Norris.
“100 percent!” Russell declared, followed by laughter.
“Nothing to Lose” – How Does Verstappen View His Title Prospects?
Max Verstappen himself acknowledged a considerable points difference between him and the McLarens in the Driver`s Championship, indicating that he is not currently focused on the title.
