World number 17 Andrey Rublev commented on Jannik Sinner`s return to the Tour at the Rome `Masters`. The Italian recently rejoined competition after a period away.
When asked about Sinner`s return on May 5th and his perspective as a fellow player, Rublev said:
“What, Sinner is here? Yes, great, he is a hero, a home hero. So I think it`s a big event for tennis – the Masters in Italy plus Sinner`s first tournament. It will attract a lot of attention to the tournament, and that is the most important thing for players.”
When questioned if he was surprised that Sinner managed to retain the world No. 1 ranking despite his break, Rublev responded candidly:
“I don`t care at all, in a good way. It`s not my problem, so there`s nothing to be surprised about,” Rublev said with a laugh. “He should be happy or surprised. Or someone who wanted to overtake him. As for me, I`m just on the sidelines,” he added, again laughing.
