Richard Gasquet: The Davis Cup Finals Stress Was Unprecedented

Former world No. 7 French tennis player Richard Gasquet shared which moments from his career he considers the most challenging and stressful.

“Most of all, I am proud of the Davis Cup – it was absolutely amazing. We played in Lille in front of 28,000 spectators – those emotional moments surpassed everything else I’ve experienced. However, I have never felt such intense stress as I did in Lille during the 2014 and 2017 finals. Those were, without a doubt, the most tense moments of my entire career.”

“Nevertheless, what will truly remain in my memory is the ability to play, interact with the crowd, and travel the world showcasing great tennis. I always dreamed of this when I was young, and now, emotionally, it feels like the right time to step back. I have wonderful memories that will last a lifetime – and that is the most important thing. Of course, there are matches I wish I could replay, especially the ones I lost – I would love to have won them. But I was fortunate; I had a wonderful career, and I feel fulfilled as a tennis player,” Gasquet stated at a press conference following his second-round match at the French Open.
