Portugal has officially secured its place on the Formula 1 calendar for the 2027 and 2028 seasons, marking a confirmed return for the Iberian nation to the sport`s annual schedule.
The Autodromo Internacional do Algarve in Portimão will host the event, stepping in as the replacement for the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, which is confirmed to exit the F1 rotation after the conclusion of the 2026 season.
Portimão previously featured on the F1 schedule during the pandemic-affected seasons of 2020 and 2021. During those appearances, the circuit proved its capability to host world-class motorsport, offering thrilling races during a period when the global calendar required significant reshuffling.
The 4.6-kilometer Portimão track, officially known as the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve, is highly praised for presenting a severe technical challenge to drivers, characterized by dramatic elevation changes. This includes a steep descent into the final right-hand corner before the main straight, a feature that always tests driver skill.
Furthermore, Portugal boasts a significant heritage in Formula 1 history, extending beyond the recent races in Portimão. The country hosted its inaugural Grand Prix in Porto back in 1958. Other classic Portuguese venues that have welcomed F1 race weekends across the sport`s 75-year history include Monsanto and Estoril.
