Former world No. 3, Nadezhda Petrova, commented on Daniil Medvedev’s defeat to Jaume Munar in the second round of the Miami Masters.
Petrova believes that such an early exit is very disappointing. She noted that Medvedev had been struggling with a back injury after Indian Wells and was not in optimal physical condition for the match against Munar. In such circumstances, it is difficult to show your best tennis, especially at such a high level where all opponents are motivated to win. Perhaps Medvedev hoped to improve his form during the tournament, but Munar played excellent tennis and did not allow Medvedev to get into the game.
Now, according to Petrova, Medvedev needs to take a break, pay attention to his physical condition, become stronger, and intensely prepare for the clay season, which he dislikes. Petrova suggested that the clay season might be a surprise for him, or that an unsuccessful start to the season will affect his year-end ranking.
