McTominay: Napoli’s Scudetto Hopes Aren’t Over, Despite Injuries

Scott McTominay maintains that Napoli’s pursuit of the Scudetto is far from over. He stresses that the team will not dwell on their injury struggles or past disappointments, but rather focus on the remaining games.

Napoli was held to a 1-1 draw against Parma. The match saw an early setback with Parma scoring just 33 seconds into the game through Gabriel Strefezza, before McTominay equalized for Napoli.

This result leaves Napoli six points behind the league leaders, Inter Milan. Inter has the opportunity to extend their lead to nine points if they win their upcoming match against Como.

McTominay’s Belief in Napoli’s Title Chances

“We know that nothing is decided until the very end, and it’s crucial to keep pushing,” McTominay stated when asked about the Scudetto race. “Today was a challenging match. We had opportunities, including those from Elmas and Hojlund. This is football; sometimes you don’t get the results you want, and this was one of those times.

“We need to perform at a high level in the next six games and aim to secure maximum points.”

Napoli experienced a disastrous start to the game, conceding a goal within the first minute. A long ball was flicked on, leading to Strefezza’s angled shot.

“These matches are tough. It’s not easy when you concede an early goal, but that’s part of the game. The crowd is passionate, and the atmosphere is intense. However, I believe we matched their spirit and intensity. We just needed to find a way to break them down and score.

“We need to review the game footage and take responsibility because these are the types of matches where you must show up and win.”

McTominay, who previously gained attention for highlighting Napoli’s extensive injury list, was asked if he ever considered the team’s potential with a fully fit squad.

“Interviews after a game can be emotional, and sometimes you speak the truth. It is true that we’ve faced numerous injuries and had many games with players unavailable. In competitions like these, having a full squad is vital, which we haven’t had,” McTominay explained.

“It wasn’t anyone’s fault; it’s just a fact. We have to accept it and those who are playing must strive to do more. Eljif Elmas performed exceptionally well, stepping up despite not playing much initially. Everyone needs to be prepared to work hard.

“We won’t dwell on it or get discouraged by how the season has unfolded. We must carry on with determination and see what happens at the end of the season.”

McTominay: Napoli’s Scudetto Dream Isn’t Over, But We Won’t Cry About Injuries

Scott McTominay insists that “nothing is finished” regarding the Scudetto race. He also stated that Napoli “are not going to cry about” their injury crisis or dwell on what could have been.

The Partenopei were held to a 1-1 draw at the Stadio Tardini. They conceded an early goal from Parma after just 33 seconds, scored by Gabriel Strefezza, before the Scotland international equalized.

This result means the gap at the top of the table is currently six points. However, Inter Milan could extend this lead to nine points if they defeat Como this evening.

McTominay Has Faith in Napoli’s Title Challenge

“Obviously, we know that nothing is ever finished, and it’s important to keep going,” McTominay told DAZN Italia when asked if the Scudetto dream was over.

“Today was a very difficult game. We had chances with Elmas and Hojlund as well. This is football; you’re going to get results you don’t like, and this is one of them.

“We have to play the next six games at a high level and try to get maximum points.”

It was a nightmare start for Napoli, who conceded the opener after just 33 seconds when a long ball was flicked on for Strefezza’s angled drive.

“These games are difficult. It’s not easy if we gift them a goal at the beginning, but that’s football. The crowd is emotional, the atmosphere is intense, but I thought we had matched their spirit and intensity. We just had to find a way to break them down and score a goal.

“We have to look back at the video and take accountability because these are games where you have to show up and you have to win.”

McTominay went viral in Italy a few months ago when he listed all the big players who were out injured. He was asked if he ever thinks about what might have been this season with a full Napoli squad at their disposal.

“Interviews after a game can be emotional, you say things that are true, and it is true we’ve had a lot of injuries, a lot of games where we had players missing. This is the key: with all those competitions, you need players available, which we didn’t really have,” added McTominay.

“It was nobody’s fault; it was just a fact, and we have to accept this. Those who are there must strive to do more. Eljif Elmas did so well; he didn’t play much at the start and then stepped in. Everyone has to be ready to work.

“We’re not going to cry about it; we’re not getting upset about the way the season has gone. We have to continue as men and see what happens at the end of the season.”
