An investigation by the FIA following the Miami Grand Prix has cleared McLaren of suspicions regarding the illegal use of liquid to cool their tyres.
McLaren`s strong performance and dominant start to the season had reportedly led some rival teams to suspect they might be employing methods outside the regulations to maintain optimal tyre temperatures during races.
Adding a touch of humour to the situation, McLaren Racing chief executive Zak Brown was seen with a bottle labeled `tire water` on the pit wall in Miami, playfully addressing the rivals` suspicions.
In anticipation of the upcoming Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, the FIA released a technical delegate`s report from the Miami event held on May 4. The report confirmed that Oscar Piastri`s car, which was among the top ten finishers, was randomly selected for more extensive post-race physical inspections.
The document specified that the inspections focused on the wheel bodywork assemblies for compliance with Technical Regulation Article 3.13, and physical checks were conducted on all four corners for adherence to Technical Regulation Article 11.5, which prohibits liquid cooling of brakes. The report concluded: “All inspected components were found to be in conformance with the 2025 Formula One Technical Regulations.”
The report also noted that Charles Leclerc`s Ferrari was checked for other elements, including the steering wheel assembly and clutch operating device, and was also found to be compliant.
Driver Reactions: Piastri Unconcerned, Verstappen Gives Credit
Piastri`s impressive run, including four wins out of the first six races and a significant lead in the Drivers` Championship, particularly the large gap in Miami where he and teammate Lando Norris finished well ahead of George Russell in third, had seemingly fueled the speculation.
The Australian driver, currently leading the standings as he chases his first title, stated that he was never worried by the rumours that McLaren might be breaking the rules.
Speaking after the report`s release, Piastri commented, “I honestly haven`t read anything because I`ve not been concerned. Maybe next time we`ll put some little figurines in a water slide as well. We`ll come up with something. Clearly it`s all been passed. I had no concerns, so play on.”
When asked if Red Bull was satisfied with the situation, Max Verstappen replied, “I have also never said that it was not fine. They are clearly doing something very clever, and you have to give them credit for it.”
