World No. 16 Lorenzo Musetti shared his thoughts after losing to Carlos Alcaraz in the Monte Carlo Masters final, where the scores were 6-3, 1-6, 0-6.
He explained, “I felt very good with the ball today and knew what I needed to do. However, it was physically challenging. I tried to compensate early on by playing freely, but eventually, physical issues, fatigue, and the stress accumulated from recent days and matches took over. Unfortunately, I couldn`t finish the match in the sense of competing to my full potential until the end.”
When asked about the difficulty of playing against Alcaraz, Musetti responded, “Carlos is already a legend in tennis, even being younger than me. He`s breaking records, and you can feel his aura on the court.”
Musetti added, “I had a fantastic first set today, making him adjust his game. If I had been 100% physically fit, I probably could have sustained that level longer. It`s essential to be in top shape to defeat players like him. As I mentioned on court, I`m looking forward to getting my revenge soon.”
Regarding his overall feelings about the tournament, he said, “I`m taking away many positives. Of course, we`re already focused on new goals and aiming high because I haven`t yet reached the Top 10. That`s my primary goal for this season. We are close enough to keep pushing and dreaming.”
Musetti concluded, “Clay is my favorite surface, my natural environment. This week has boosted my confidence, and I`ll be more ambitious in tournaments like Monte Carlo and Roland Garros. This part of the season is important, and I don`t have many points to defend. I hope to achieve something significant. I believe my level is sufficient to accomplish great things on clay,” said Musetti at the press conference.
In related news, Musetti`s coach mentioned, “Lorenzo felt a quadriceps issue during the warm-up this morning.”
