Locatelli: “Italy Failed – Devastated and Drained”

Manuel Locatelli has become the latest Italian player to break his silence following the Azzurri’s heartbreaking World Cup playoff elimination. He posted an emotional and direct message on social media, accepting collective responsibility for the failure and pledging his unwavering dedication to the national team.

This statement from the Juventus midfielder comes as a wave of national sorrow continues to engulf Italian football, days after their painful penalty shootout defeat to Bosnia in Zenica.

Following Leonardo Spinazzola’s immediate post-match comments and Gianluigi Donnarumma’s statement earlier today, Locatelli has now added his voice. Each message highlights the squad’s ongoing struggle to process the immense disappointment of a third consecutive failure to qualify for the World Cup.

Italy had approached the match with genuine optimism after their victory over Northern Ireland. However, Alessandro Bastoni’s first-half red card fundamentally altered the complexion of the contest.

The game concluded with a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes, followed by a goalless extra period, ultimately leading to a devastating penalty shootout defeat. This series of events has left the entire nation searching for answers.

Locatelli: “We Failed, I’m Devastated”

“I am devastated, completely drained, with tears in my eyes,” Locatelli wrote, before addressing the supporters who had backed the team throughout their campaign.

He continued, “We deeply felt our responsibility to the children, families, grandparents, and all Italians who stood by us. We gave our absolute all, and I am immensely proud of this team. The players, manager, and entire staff were united in pursuing this dream. We expended every last bit of energy, yet we could not deliver this World Cup to you.”

He confronted the harsh reality directly.

“We failed; that is the plain truth, and I bear the full burden of it,” he affirmed. Despite the profound disappointment, Locatelli concluded with a resolute message, echoing Donnarumma’s sentiment about moving forward. “It’s tough, incredibly tough, but we must rise together. There won’t be a single day I don’t give my absolute everything on the field.”
