Lando Norris reacted defiantly to the jeers he received from fans after securing victory at the Mexico City Grand Prix. He stated that he couldn`t help but laugh at his detractors following a weekend where he demonstrated overwhelming performance.
The McLaren team`s driver, Norris, secured a remarkable pole position during Saturday`s Qualifying session, which he then converted into a commanding race win on Sunday. This victory allowed him to surpass Oscar Piastri and reclaim the lead in the Drivers` Championship standings, with only four races left in the season.
During his post-race interview, Norris paused uncomfortably as a large crowd at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez booed him. He subsequently informed interviewer James Hinchcliffe of his intention to “ignore all of this.”
The booing continued when he appeared on the podium to receive his trophy. In a later press conference, Norris expressed his bewilderment regarding the fans` negative reaction.
Despite this, he shrugged off the criticism, commenting that he found it amusing to reciprocate their jeers with laughter.
“Honestly, people are free to do as they please,” Norris remarked.
“They have every right to do it if that`s what they choose. I believe that`s just part of sports sometimes.”
“I`m not sure why I can`t stop laughing when I`m booed. I find it makes the experience more entertaining for me. So, yes, they are welcome to continue if they wish.”
“Naturally, it`s not ideal. I`d much prefer to have the crowd cheering for me. This situation was similar in Monza and other venues.”
“I genuinely don`t know why, but I just can`t stop laughing, so they can keep it up if they want.”

A journalist proposed that the Mexican audience might perceive McLaren as favoring Norris over his teammate, Piastri. This perception was linked to the controversial car swap decision at Monza following a slow pit stop.
Norris responded, “If that`s what they choose to believe, they certainly have the right to do so.”
“They`re free to think whatever they desire. However, from our team`s perspective, we naturally strive to operate fairly.”
