Weston McKennie recently reflected on his extraordinary personal and professional journey. Once marginalized at Juventus, he has transformed into one of Luciano Spalletti’s most crucial and reliable midfielders. With a World Cup on home soil for the United States looming, his current success stands in stark contrast to the challenging periods he once faced in his career.
The American midfielder, who recently secured a contract extension with Juventus, candidly discussed his battles with self-doubt, the importance of humility, and remaining grounded even after achieving feats he once deemed unattainable. His renewed contract underscores his pivotal role under Spalletti.
McKennie’s frankness regarding the uncertainties of his early career is particularly impactful, given his current standing at the pinnacle of professional football.
“During my time with the USA youth teams, I never imagined such success would be possible for me,” McKennie revealed. He continued, “As a child, discouragement comes easily. Every time I was left out of a squad, I felt there was no path forward. Returning to Dallas, my family, and FC Dallas always reignited my drive; they believed in me consistently. That unwavering support motivated me to continuously improve, to surpass what I thought were my limits. I’m incredibly thankful for the journey that led me here; I genuinely never envisioned reaching this level.”

McKennie: ‘I’m a human being like everyone else’
This transformative journey has profoundly shaped him, not only as an athlete but also as a public personality keenly aware of the responsibility that accompanies being a role model for aspiring young American footballers.
“It’s an extraordinary feeling, but it also carries significant responsibility,” he stated. “In my younger days, social media wasn’t prevalent, and my role models were figures I saw on television or in magazines. Today, the weight of responsibility is considerably greater.”
Yet, McKennie emphasizes that what he hopes people truly grasp from his narrative goes beyond his on-field achievements. “I may be a good footballer, but fundamentally, I am a human being just like everyone else,” he asserted.
“I strive to consistently remain true to my values and my heritage,” he expressed. “My hope is that people perceive me as humble; it’s essential to stay grounded, pursue your dreams, and forge your unique path.”
Outside of football, McKennie portrays himself as someone who cherishes simplicity. He finds joy in ordinary pleasures: barbecues with family, shared drinks with friends, and spending time with his dogs – activities that ground him and connect him to his life before widespread recognition.
“I truly enjoy embracing life to its fullest,” he remarked, concluding, “The past six to eight months have been quite positive across my family life, friendships, and time spent with my dogs.”
