Jannik Sinner: “I Can’t Control Anything” About Ranking Lead

World No. 1 Italian tennis player, Jannik Sinner, has commented on maintaining his top position in the global rankings despite being inactive for three months.

When asked if he anticipated his leadership in the tournament standings would remain largely unchanged despite his absence, Sinner stated, “The answer is the same as before: I can`t control how others play, even if I were playing. Ultimately, it`s just points. We agree that the ranking is important, but this is a slightly different situation. A new generation is emerging, Djokovic continues to reach finals or win tournaments, but I can`t control any of that.”

The interviewer pointed out that Zverev and Alcaraz had a significant opportunity to overtake him while he was sidelined, but appeared to feel pressure. Sinner responded, “Matches are never a given, even against players ranked 100th or 150th in the world; they are all intense if you`re not at 100%. Perhaps they are going through difficult times off the court, we can`t know. Many things can bother you when you step onto the court, maybe it`s pressure, or being number one, or perhaps family issues. Of course, everything can change very quickly, now there`s a surface change from Monte Carlo to clay, where Alcaraz will be the favorite. As for Zverev, he could have become number one, having played excellently at Roland Garros some time ago. We`ll see how it goes,” Sinner said in an interview with Sky Sports.
