British tennis talent Jack Draper will have to wait longer to begin his clay-court campaign, as he has officially withdrawn from the upcoming Monte Carlo Masters. This decision delays his much-anticipated transition to the red dirt.
Draper, whose promising career has frequently been hampered by injuries, particularly over the last nine months, continues to prioritize his physical well-being despite making steady strides in his recovery. His absence from the first Masters 1000 event of the clay swing highlights an ongoing cautious approach.
A Season of Mixed Fortunes and Careful Management
The year 2025 had started as Draper’s strongest season to date, marked by multiple Masters finals appearances and a significant title win at Indian Wells, propelling him into the ATP’s top five. However, his momentum was disrupted during the grass-court swing when an arm injury forced an early end to his season in New York.
While the initial hope was that an extended break would allow a full recovery for 2026, the plan faced early hurdles, including a withdrawal from the Australian Open. Draper eventually returned for the Davis Cup qualifiers and later competed in the “Sunshine Double.”
During this period, he notably defeated Novak Djokovic on his way to a quarterfinal finish at Indian Wells, though he experienced an early exit in Miami. Draper is now adopting an extremely cautious stance. Although his previous injury has not flared up, he has opted to step back from the tour temporarily to intensify his fitness training, especially crucial before the physically demanding natural surface tournaments.
Top Players Prioritizing Rest
Draper is not alone in his decision to skip Monte Carlo. High-profile players like Novak Djokovic and Taylor Fritz have also announced their withdrawals from this year’s tournament.
With an increasingly packed tennis calendar, a growing number of athletes are choosing rest and recovery over pushing through fatigue. As the only non-mandatory Masters 1000 event, Monte Carlo is increasingly seeing the impact of this strategic shift among top-tier competitors.
