Italy has advanced to the World Cup play-off final after a dominant 2-0 victory over Northern Ireland. The decisive win was spearheaded by Sandro Tonali, who delivered a stellar performance by scoring one goal and assisting Moise Kean for the second.
The Azzurri entered this critical match missing key players Federico Chiesa, Mattia Zaccagni, Giovanni Di Lorenzo, and Gianluca Scamacca. However, Alessandro Bastoni and Matteo Politano recovered from minor knocks to feature in the starting lineup. Northern Ireland, who secured their play-off spot largely through their Nations League performance, were without Ali McCann, Conor Bradley, and Daniel Ballard. Italy is now set to face either Wales or Bosnia and Herzegovina in the final play-off away match on March 31.

Early exchanges saw Federico Dimarco twice test Northern Ireland’s goalkeeper, Pierce Charles, including a fierce half-volley that ricocheted off Mateo Retegui. Northern Ireland had a chance when Ethan Galbraith’s counter-attack ended with a shot straight at Gianluigi Donnarumma. Italy maintained pressure, with Retegui’s angled drive blocked and Bastoni’s header going just wide. Moise Kean also fired high from the edge of the area, and another Bastoni header sailed over the bar.

After the restart, Retegui squandered a clear opportunity following a Northern Ireland error, his poor first touch leading to a collision with the keeper. Moments later, Charles produced an excellent fingertip save to deny Kean’s angled shot.
Italy’s sustained pressure finally broke the deadlock in the 56th minute. A cross from Politano was cleared by Isaac Price to the edge of the area, where Sandro Tonali expertly controlled the ball before unleashing a powerful, low right-footed half-volley into the net.

Following a yellow card, Alessandro Bastoni was replaced by Federico Gatti. Kean continued to threaten, forcing another save with an angled drive after a run down the right. Donnarumma narrowly avoided disaster after a poor pass was intercepted by Jamie Donley. Francesco Pio Esposito’s glancing header from a corner was cleared almost off the line by Trai Hume, with Riccardo Calafiori ready to pounce behind him.
Kean came incredibly close with an acrobatic overhead kick from Nicolo Barella’s cross, a prelude to his upcoming goal. Just moments later, in the 80th minute, he successfully doubled Italy’s lead. Tonali was once again the architect, delivering a precise ball over the top. Kean controlled it with his right foot, used the bounce to turn past his defender, and swept a left-footed shot into the far post, making it 2-0.

Marco Palestra made his senior debut, displaying skill with a sensational touch from Dimarco’s cross, although Pio Esposito couldn’t keep the ball in play. In added time, a Northern Ireland free-kick caused a scramble in the six-yard box, but they were unable to convert the chance.
