“I Was Surprised”: Carlos Alcaraz Reacts to Jannik Sinner’s Decision

As the clay court season gains momentum, two of the sport’s leading male players, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, are poised to launch their European clay campaigns at the Monte Carlo Masters this week.

Beyond vying for the prestigious title, the coveted World No. 1 ranking is also at stake. The victor of the tournament will conclude the week holding the top spot in the ATP rankings.

A Divergent Start to the 2026 Season

Both athletes arrive in Monaco following significantly different performances to kick off the 2026 season. Carlos Alcaraz showcased exceptional form early on, achieving his Career Grand Slam in Melbourne and subsequently securing the title in Doha.

Nevertheless, the dynamic shifted considerably during the Sunshine Double. While Alcaraz experienced a less-than-stellar run through Indian Wells and Miami, Jannik Sinner found his stride, clinching both titles and re-establishing his supremacy after a somewhat subdued start to the year.

This marked shift in outcomes has created an intriguing dynamic leading into the clay season, with both players entering Monte Carlo with distinct performance trajectories.

Anticipating a Final Showdown

The rapid transition from Miami to Monte Carlo initially sparked uncertainty regarding Sinner’s participation. Yet, the Italian swiftly allayed these fears, being among the first competitors to arrive and commence practice in Monaco. His choice even caught his primary competitor off guard, as Alcaraz candidly expressed his surprise:

“Honestly, I was surprised that Jannik, after Indian Wells, Miami, and the whole tour, came to Monte Carlo to play, but obviously that speaks to the great physical condition he’s in right now, what he’s capable of.”

Intriguingly, despite a history of six encounters last year, the duo has not yet competed against each other in 2026. A prospective meeting in Monte Carlo would thus mark their first confrontation of the year—and significantly elevate the stakes. Should this highly anticipated showdown occur, it would determine not only the Monte Carlo title but also the coveted World No. 1 ranking, promising a monumental clash to kick off this year’s clay court season.
