The Golf Travel Writers of America (GTWA) has announced a significant leadership change, with George McNeilly stepping into the role of its new President.
GTWA functions as a professional organization for media professionals—including writers, editors, broadcasters, and podcasters—who cover golf destinations and the broader industry. Its primary mission is to uphold rigorous journalistic standards, facilitate the exchange of industry expertise, and deliver credible, engaging content about golf experiences worldwide.
McNeilly underscored the invaluable credibility of independent media. “No press releases or agency content can match the credibility and authenticity of third-party working media members who have no vested interest in the success or failure of a golf course, resort, or sporting event,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of respecting the organization’s foundational principles and history.
Founded 21 years ago by Bruce Vittner and John Edwards, GTWA was established to create a dedicated forum for traveling golf writers. McNeilly highlighted the dynamic evolution of the media landscape, noting that many impactful storytellers are no longer full-time employees due to shrinking budgets and staff in news organizations. He urged businesses seeking media amplification to recognize and value the broad reach and commitment of GTWA members.
Membership in GTWA provides substantial benefits, such as access to an experienced peer network, opportunities for collaboration, professional development, and heightened visibility within a community dedicated to the craft of golf travel reporting. It also fosters connections with industry partners, tourism groups, and destination representatives. McNeilly envisions GTWA serving as a “Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval” for those passionate about traveling and documenting the sport of golf.
Recent organizational enhancements include revised bylaws and a streamlined mission statement: “To inform and engage golf fans and participants with integrity wherever the sport is played, watched, attended, written about, or visited.” While a name change was considered, the majority decided to retain “Golf Travel Writers of America,” with McNeilly asserting its continued relevance as they distribute content across diverse and emerging platforms.
Alan Darty, GTWA’s incoming Vice President, led the initiative to redesign the association’s website. The updated platform, golftravelwriters.com, aims to better serve its evolving membership, which now encompasses broadcasters, podcasters, and credible influencers who share the organization’s mission.
The GTWA executive committee includes President George McNeilly, Vice President Alan Darty, Secretary Dan Vukelich, Treasurer Joy Sarver, and the article’s author as President Emeritus. The organization’s headquarters are located in Orlando, Florida.
McNeilly brings extensive professional experience to his new leadership role. For the past 14 years, he has taught Sports Business at Full Sail University while consistently writing about professional golf, related destinations, and products. Prior to this, he served as a senior executive at ESPN for over a decade. His distinguished career began as an award-winning multimedia broadcaster, producer, and writer, covering major global events including four Olympic Games, 17 Super Bowls, and numerous premier golf tournaments.
Outlining his vision for GTWA, McNeilly stated, “We want to be welcoming yet discerning.” He emphasized the importance of acknowledging the growth of multimedia contributors and maximizing the many opportunities for members to deliver value to their audiences and stakeholders.
