Fiorentina Edges Rakow 2-1 in Thrilling UECL First Leg

Fiorentina secured a narrow advantage over Rakow in their Conference League clash, thanks to an Albert Gudmundsson penalty in stoppage time. This late goal responded to Jonatan Braut Brunes’ earlier strike for Rakow, which had given them the lead, before Cher Ndour equalized.

Fiorentina’s journey to the Round of 16 was a struggle, coming after a dramatic play-off against Jagiellonia where they won the first leg 3-0 away but lost the return leg by the same score at home, only just advancing in extra time with a 5-4 aggregate. This marked the start of a dip in form, with only one draw in their last three competitive games, compounded by several key players out with injuries or suspension. Meanwhile, Rakow had claimed the Polish championship in 2023 and finished second in their domestic league phase.

Early in the match, Europa League debutant Oliver Christensen made a crucial save. Robin Gosens and Pietro Comuzzo also created dangerous moments, though their shots lacked precision. Jacopo Fazzini squandered a prime opportunity, volleying over from close range, and his scuffed shot just before halftime tested goalkeeper Oliwier Zych.

The second half began with off-target efforts from Brunes and Ndour. In the 60th minute, Rakow broke the deadlock when Brunes capitalized on a defensive lapse from Fiorentina to score from close range. However, Fiorentina responded just two minutes later: Rolando Mandragora set up Ndour, who, from the edge of the box, struck a half-volley with the outside of his right boot, sending it with a strange swerve into the top corner.

Roberto Piccoli then dispossessed Bogdan Racovitan in midfield, surged forward, and unleashed a powerful shot that unfortunately cannoned off the crossbar. Young forward Riccardo Braschi made his senior debut for Fiorentina in the dying minutes.

Just when it seemed the match would end in a draw, a dramatic turn of events occurred. Michael Ameyaw handled Dodo’s cross inside the penalty area. Gudmundsson stepped up and coolly converted the penalty into the bottom corner, sending Zych the wrong way and clinching a stoppage-time victory for Fiorentina.
