Watford’s recent 3-1 victory over Wrexham in the EFL Championship was a particularly poignant occasion, as it marked Edoardo Bove’s first goal since his remarkable recovery from a cardiac arrest. Among the cheering crowd were numerous Roma supporters, who travelled to witness the moment, holding aloft a banner that poignantly read: “Even if you leave Rome, you won’t be alone.”
Bove Finds the Net Again, Over a Year Since His Last Goal: “Not Quite My Dream Scenario!”
Bove’s dramatic 94th-minute strike not only sealed a 3-1 win for his new club, Watford, against promotion hopefuls Wrexham but also signified a triumphant return to the game he loves. This goal, scored on a recent Tuesday evening, was his first competitive effort since October 2024, when he last found the net for Fiorentina in a dominant 5-1 win against his former boyhood club, Roma.
Tragically, shortly after that 2024 goal, Bove suffered a cardiac arrest during a Serie A match between Fiorentina and Inter. Following this life-threatening incident, he underwent surgery to have an internal defibrillator fitted. While this device precludes him from playing professional football in Italy, it fortunately does not prevent him from continuing his career in the United Kingdom.
His situation draws parallels with that of Christian Eriksen, who also had an internal defibrillator implanted after suffering a cardiac arrest while representing Denmark at EURO 2020. Eriksen subsequently left Inter and successfully resumed his career in the UK, playing for Brentford and later Manchester United.
After more than a year away from the pitch, during which he diligently assessed his options and accepted that a return to Serie A was not feasible, Bove signed for Championship side Watford as a free agent in January 2026. Since his arrival, he has made six substitute appearances for the Hornets, culminating in his memorable first goal in England during the recent 3-1 triumph over Wrexham at Vicarage Road.
“I had plenty of time to imagine my first goal during my recovery. To be honest, it wasn’t quite like this; it was an easy tap-in! In my dreams, it flew into the top corner,” Bove quipped playfully after the final whistle.
He continued, expressing deep gratitude: “But the celebration was incredible. I went straight to the fans, and I’m so happy for the team who have supported me, and all the staff, physios, and doctors who have meticulously monitored my situation and worked tirelessly to get me back on the pitch.”
“I’m incredibly happy this happened today, and I’m eagerly looking forward to what comes next in my journey.”
Adding an extra layer of emotion to Bove’s milestone, a significant contingent of UK-based Roma supporters were there to cheer him on. They proudly displayed Giallorossi scarves and unfurled a banner bearing the heartfelt message: “Even if you leave Rome, you won’t be alone.”
