Carreno-Busta Points to Tennis Ball Variety as Potential Injury Cause

Spanish tennis player Pablo Carreno-Busta, currently ranked 99th in the world, has offered his perspective on a possible cause for his recurring elbow injuries.

According to Carreno-Busta, his doctor believes that the frequent changes in tennis balls used across different tournaments are detrimental to players` health, leading to injuries. He stated, “My doctor once told me that the constant change of balls between tournaments is killing the players, and it`s really true. Many players are experiencing elbow problems right now.”

Carreno-Busta elaborated on his own experience, mentioning that while scans of his elbow weren`t alarming, the pain was significant. He recalled an incident in 2023 where his elbow swelled after just 30 minutes of practicing with Roland Garros balls in preparation for the tournament. He concluded, “Balls certainly have an impact, but I can`t say if this is the main cause of the problems or just the years of playing.”

After undergoing elbow surgery in November 2023, Carreno-Busta has successfully returned to the top 100 in the ATP rankings as of April 14th.
