Carlos Alcaraz Reflects on World No. 1 Ranking After Strong Monte Carlo Start

Carlos Alcaraz kicked off his clay-court season impressively at the Monte Carlo Masters, securing a dominant 6-1, 6-3 victory over Sebastian Baez in just over an hour during his opening match.

The young Spaniard took control from the outset, comfortably winning the first set with ease. While his performance saw a slight dip in the second, his superior quality ensured a straightforward win, marking a robust beginning to his tournament campaign.

Alcaraz Addresses Ranking Pressure

The current World No. 1 enters this clay season under considerable pressure, having accumulated a significant number of ranking points during last year’s clay swing. However, Alcaraz made it clear that his primary focus lies elsewhere, emphasizing continuous improvement over maintaining his ranking. Speaking after the match, he stated:

“To be honest, I anticipate losing the World No. 1 ranking. I’m unsure if it will happen during this tournament or the next one. I have a lot of points to defend, and it will be extremely challenging to keep them all. Even if I do, Jannik will gain points here since he has none to defend. So, I’ll aim to play my best and see what unfolds. But frankly, the number one position isn’t my primary concern right now. My goal is simply to feel as comfortable as possible on clay and to navigate the clay swing effectively.”

This perspective is consistent with Alcaraz’s statements over the past year. Even after his title run in Melbourne at the start of 2026, he stressed that his current priority is the process of development and improvement, rather than immediate results.

Sinner Makes Strong Monte Carlo Start

Meanwhile, Jannik Sinner, the player most likely to challenge for the top ranking, also commenced his Monte Carlo Masters campaign with a commanding performance.

The Italian cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 victory, showcasing his elite serving and formidable backhand, just a week after clinching the Miami Open title. With both players displaying high-level tennis and yet to face each other this season, a potential encounter between Alcaraz and Sinner in Monte Carlo could add another thrilling chapter to their rapidly growing rivalry.
