Inter extended their lead at the top of the Serie A table to nine points thanks to the emphatic 5-2 triumph over the Giallorossi at San Siro on Easter Sunday. Goals for the Nerazzurri came from Lautaro (twice), Hakan Calhanoglu, Thuram, and Nicolo Barella.
This decisive result ended a four-match winless streak across all competitions that had preceded the recent international break, applying pressure on second-placed Milan and third-placed Napoli ahead of their upcoming fixtures on Easter Monday.
Bergomi’s Praise for Inter Stars in 5-2 Roma Victory
Several of Inter’s top talents delivered stellar performances against Roma. Lautaro Martinez, with his two goals, now leads the Serie A scoring charts for the 2025-26 season with 16 goals, five more than any other player in the division.
“It truly demonstrates the importance of having a player with such quality and personality, particularly in how he moves and creates space for himself,” Bergomi remarked while analyzing Lautaro’s display on Sky Sport Italia.
“He works tirelessly in both phases of the game; he broke the deadlock with his first goal and sealed the victory with his second.”
However, Bergomi believes that Lautaro’s strike partner, Thuram, deserves just as much credit for his contribution: “I want to highlight Thuram’s performance; he was a player Inter had genuinely been missing.”
“How often did he draw defenders away and create openings? He not only scored but crucially provided two assists. This complemented Lautaro’s clinical finishing and Calhanoglu’s skill.”
Reflecting on the match’s flow, Bergomi added: “Roma played well in the first half, but the goal that made it 2-1 significantly shifted the emotional momentum of the game. In the second half, Inter approached it brilliantly, while their opponents found themselves struggling.”
With only seven league matches remaining in the 2025-26 season, questions arise about whether Milan or Napoli still have a realistic chance of catching Inter.
“I’m uncertain whether the league title race is effectively over or if it has reignited,” Bergomi confessed.
“Inter needs to secure five more victories, and they are well aware of their fixture list. The team must not become complacent; they need to acknowledge their responsibility and navigate any challenges. We will see if they achieve it. Their next match is against Como on Sunday.”
