World No. 39 Anastasia Potapova stated that she is currently in the best shape of her career. In the second round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Madrid, the Russian player defeated China`s Zheng Qinwen with a score of 6/4, 6/4.
When asked about this being her first win against a Top-10 player since 2023, Potapova commented: “Yes, maybe I was just beating opponents ranked 11th or 12th, so it felt like such wins hadn`t happened recently, that it couldn`t be true. Of course, I want these kinds of victories more often, to win these matches more confidently.”
Asked about her current feeling regarding her game level and where she should be in the ranking given this quality, she replied: “I feel I can enter the Top 20 – I feel I`m at that level, I should be there. I won`t make firm promises, of course, because everyone wants to be higher, but I believe I am currently in the best shape of my career.”
Potapova`s next match in the third round will be against American Sofia Kenin.
