Alexandra Eala Advances After Coco Gauff Retires With Concerning Arm Injury at Indian Wells

Coco Gauff was forced to retire mid-match at Indian Wells, exiting the tournament due to a left arm injury during her match against Alexandra Eala. This marks only the second time in her career she has withdrawn during a contest.

Despite a strong opening-round win, Gauff’s performance seemed hindered from the start. She struggled significantly with her service game, failing to hold serve even once.

Coco Gauff Explains Injury Leading to Retirement

Suspicions were confirmed when Gauff took a medical timeout for a left arm issue near the end of the first set. She later revealed the problem had affected her as early as the second game of the match.

Gauff elaborated, stating, “We’re going to figure out what it is tomorrow, but based off the feeling, being told that it’s probably something nerve-related. I’ve never experienced anything like this sensation before. As the match progressed, it worsened, even impacting shots where I wasn’t actively using my left arm.”

Ultimately, the discomfort became too severe. Trailing by a set and a break, Gauff reluctantly retired, having attempted to play through the pain out of respect for her opponent and friend, Eala.

Eala Displays Composure in Emotional Victory

Despite the unfortunate circumstances, Alexandra Eala, who had recently suffered a significant defeat against Gauff in Dubai, can draw encouragement from her composure and performance during this emotionally charged match. Following the abrupt end, Eala expressed admiration for Gauff, acknowledging her as a role model on the tour.

Eala then stated, “I want to say thank you to all the incredible women who have paved the way and who have advocated for themselves and for other women. Among them is Coco. So thank you Coco for being an amazing competitor and amazing role model. I really hope everything is well and you will recover soon.”

The two players share a close relationship off-court, having even partnered in doubles, reaching the quarterfinals of last year’s Italian Open in Rome. Moving forward, both athletes have new priorities. Gauff’s immediate focus is diagnosing and treating her injury before the Miami Open. Eala, meanwhile, will continue her strong debut at Indian Wells, preparing to face Linda Noskova in the fourth round.
