Alessandro Bastoni Under Scrutiny After Italy’s World Cup Play-off Defeat and Derby Controversy

Inter and Italy defender Alessandro Bastoni has faced a tumultuous period, drawing significant criticism following his contentious actions in February’s Derby d’Italia and his performance in Italy’s World Cup play-off final defeat against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Tuesday.

Bastoni: A Polarizing Figure in Italian Football

Bastoni’s controversial reputation began during the dramatic Derby d’Italia match between Inter and Juventus on February 14, a game Inter ultimately won 3-2.

Already booked in the first half, Bastoni simulated a foul under Pierre Kalulu’s challenge. This led to Kalulu being wrongly dismissed for a second yellow card offense. Ironically, if the correct call had been made, Bastoni would have received a yellow for diving, resulting in his own expulsion.

What truly incensed fans across Italy, beyond just those in Turin, was Bastoni’s exuberant celebration after Kalulu’s red card.

Consequently, Bastoni has been met with animosity in stadiums nationwide. A significant segment of the Italian fanbase even demanded his exclusion from Gennaro Gattuso’s squad for the recent World Cup play-off matches.

Despite the calls, Bastoni retained his spot, starting in the central role of Gattuso’s three-man defense for both the semi-final win against Northern Ireland and Tuesday’s play-off final against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

His recent first-half red card in the play-off final against Bosnia and Herzegovina has only intensified the criticism against him.

The incident occurred after a poor goal kick from Gianluigi Donnarumma was headed back into Italy’s half. As Amar Memic broke through, Bastoni, positioned as the last defender, made a late lunge from behind, resulting in a direct red card.

Italy, leading 1-0, appeared set to maintain their slim advantage until the 42nd-minute dismissal.

The Azzurri managed to hold their lead until the 79th minute before conceding and bravely resisted pressure throughout extra time. However, early penalty misses by Pio Esposito and Bryan Cristante in the shootout ultimately eliminated Italy from World Cup contention for another cycle.

Italian Fan Reactions to Bastoni’s Red Card

Unsurprisingly, reactions to Bastoni’s red card in Italy’s crucial play-off final have been overwhelmingly negative. While many interpreted it as “karma” for his earlier Derby d’Italia antics, others critiqued his judgment, arguing that Memic was not in an undeniable scoring position against Donnarumma.

One fan lamented, “Bastoni should have trusted Donnarumma more and allowed the striker to continue. He cost his country dearly.”

Another echoed this sentiment, stating, “Memic still had a lot of work to do to score. It was a complete lapse in judgment from Bastoni.”

Much of the discussion has centered on the likely reception Bastoni will face upon returning to Italy. With rumors of a summer transfer to Barcelona circulating, many believe the Inter defender would be prudent to pursue a move away from Italy in the upcoming transfer window.

A commenter questioned, “Honestly, how does Bastoni even return to Italy after this? He was already being booed across Serie A even before this incident.”

Another concurred, “If Italy misses the World Cup, I truly doubt Bastoni can remain in Italy – it would be an unbearable situation for him.”

Yet another suggested, “Bastoni should probably fly directly to Spain; I don’t see him being able to set foot in Italy again.”

Serie A commentator Patrick Kendrick expressed concern, stating, “I hope Italy doesn’t treat Bastoni the way England treated Beckham in 1998.” He later reflected on the upcoming match: “It will be intriguing to observe how Barella, Bastoni, and Dimarco perform at home against Roma on Sunday. I believe they’ll be among the top players on the field, and credit to them if they are. Ultimately, in that match, they face a no-win situation.”

While acknowledging Bastoni’s error in the tackle against Bosnia, some observers contend that he is not solely responsible for Italy’s overall failure in World Cup qualification.

One supporter articulated, “Beyond Bastoni’s blunder, the coach unfortunately made several mistakes – in squad selections, formations, substitutions, and showing favoritism to players from ‘big clubs.’ He only called up Palestra because he’s exceptional.”
