Adrian Newey suggests that Max Verstappen`s decisions regarding his Formula 1 future will likely be based on which team he believes can produce the quickest car. This comes amidst speculation that Aston Martin might attempt to sign Red Bull`s four-time world champion.
The renowned F1 designer, Newey, made his first appearance at a Grand Prix with Aston Martin in Monaco. This was nearly three months after leaving Red Bull to join the team as their new managing technical partner.
In an interview with Martin Brundle, Newey addressed the persistent rumors within the paddock that Verstappen could eventually follow Newey to the ambitious Silverstone-based team. This speculation is amplified by engine supplier Honda also switching from Red Bull to Aston Martin for the start of F1`s new regulatory era next year.
Newey described Verstappen as “obviously a formidable competitor,” adding, “but he`s also a very simple beast – and I mean that in an entirely complimentary way.” He elaborated that Verstappen simply wants a fast car where he can display his talent. “So I suspect Max will always chase who he thinks will produce the fastest car,” Newey concluded.
Verstappen currently has a contract with Red Bull that runs until the end of the 2028 season. However, it is believed that the agreement contains performance clauses that could potentially allow him to depart earlier under specific conditions.
Aston Martin has already confirmed their current driver lineup, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, are under contract for the 2026 season.
`Lance gets an unfairly bad rap`
When asked about the prospect of working with two-time champion Fernando Alonso, 43, for the first time, Newey expressed his admiration, calling him “a legend.” Newey shared that two minor regrets in his recent career were not having the opportunity to work with either Lewis Hamilton or Fernando Alonso. “So I`ve now got the opportunity to put one of those right,” he stated.
Regarding Lance Stroll, son of Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll, Newey believes he receives “an unfairly bad rap.” Newey highlighted Stroll`s performance when compared to previous teammates like Sergio Perez and Sebastian Vettel, and currently Fernando Alonso, stating, “he`s no slouch at all.”
